The Federal Government on Friday warned Nigerians against
travelling to Latin America nations following the outbreak of Zika virus in the
region.</div>

Pregnant women were particularly asked to steer clear of the
region and the restriction subsists until further notice.</div>

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, while issuing
the travel advice called for closer monitoring and screening of passengers at
various ports of entry in the country, especially for those who had visited
Latin America recently.</div>

Adewole directed the Nigeria Center for Disease Control
(NCDC) to include Zika virus diagnosis as part of ongoing effort to manage
Lassa fever outbreak in the country.

Another person has died of Lassa fever in Lagos, the Commissioner
for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, confirmed this in a statement. The victim a 27 -year-old lady
died at the Ijede General Hospital, Lagos.</div>

According to the Commissioner, the patient had received
treatment from a private hospital and three churches before she was referred to
the general hospital where she eventually died of the virus.

Lagos State Government announced that one of the two remaining Lassa 
fever patients at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, will 
make a full recovery adding that as test carried on him came out 
negative.<br />
Responding to questions the briefing, Idris refuted the rumour  that the two victims had died.<br />

“We have two cases now and they are doing very well, one of them in LUTH
 has zero converted it means he has now become negative based on the 
treatment, so if you come out very early you can be treated.”</blockquote>
The Commissioners explained that the state government had put measures in place to ensure that residents were protected.<br />

In regards to the immunization exercise, he said the government was targeting over 4 million children for measles.<br />
The commissioner also noted that the exercise, which will hold between 
January 28,  and February 1, 2016 in 20 Local Government Areas, LGAs, 
and 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, was aimed at reducing 
childhood mortality and morbidity from measles infection among 
children from age 9 months to 59 months.<br />

An unidentified student has died of Lassa fever in Ebonyi State. The 
state governor Dave Umahi made this known at a town hall meeting in 
Abakalili, the state capital yesterday January 26th. Speaking at the 
meeting, Umahi urged residents of the state to immediately go to the 
hospital for proper testing anytime they fall ill<br />

than when it reaches an advanced stage when it may be difficult to save

Meanwhile the Rivers state government has declared "Operation Kill all 
Rats" in the state after 6 people died from the disease in the state.<br />

Lassa fever is a deadly fever transmitted by rats. It can be prevented 
by keeping a clean environment. Early symptoms of the disease include 
fever, headache, chills, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, 
backache, and joint pains. Late symptoms include bleeding from the eyes,
 ears and nose, bleeding from the mouth and rectum, eye swelling, 
swelling of the genitals and rashes all over the body that often contain
 blood. It could progress to coma, shock and death.

The Akwa Ibom State government have confirmed three
indigenes with Lassa fever in the state and sadly one of them already passed on
before her test result came out. The woman, a 53-year old crayfish seller was
the third person who was confirmed to have the deadly virus in the state.</div>

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dominic Ukpong, disclosed
this at the inauguration of a task force on the eradication of Lassa Fever in
the state yesterday. He said;<br />

Unfortunately the confirmed case, a 53-year-old woman who sells crayfish, has

“We are worried because of the fact that during the
Christmas period, the 53-year-old woman got in contact with some of the family
members and some of them had already travelled back to other states before
taking ill on January 5, and then went to a private hospital where she was
being treated.</div>

“The doctors suspected at the private clinic that it was a
bigger health issue and referred her to the University of Uyo Teaching
Hospital. She was isolated there and she eventually died. We are also going to
trace those that she had contact with in the hospitals and the mortuary
workers. It is a big problem we are going to solve. And I want to appeal to
health workers that we must get every detail.

The development brought the number of Lassa fever cases in the state to three, including the index case at Ahmaddiya Hospital in Ojokoro part of the state. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, yesterday said the index case was responding to treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). The second victim, he said, is a 36-year-old lady; an indigene of Kogi State who was first discovered at Naval Reference Hospital, Ojo on January 18 before she was referred to Mainland Hospital the same day and has since been receiving antiviral medication. Idris said yesterday that her condition was stable and ambulating. The third case, he said, died because he presented late. He is said to be a 51-year-old resident of Ilasan Leki and indigene of Edo State where he attended a wedding ceremony on December 28, last year. He was initially admitted at Divine Medical Centre in Ikoyi on January 12, this year, but died at 2pm the same day before the result of the laboratory test that confirmed him positive was received. His corpse has been kept in the morgue in a leakproof body bag. He was to be buried yesterday, after due consultations with his family. Idris said there were eight negative cases while three others were pending for confirmation. He said his ministry had listed 447 contacts of the confirmed cases and 438 (98 per cent) of the contacts were being monitored. “The three confirmed cases are not related in terms of source of infections,” he stated.
