Nichols’ will, filed in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court Wednesday, only details a few specific gifts — a J.F. Herring painting will go to his son Max Nichols and his wife will get all his tangible property including furnishings, automobiles and clothing.
The 20-page will, signed last May, says the rest of his fortune will pour into a private trust.
“The Graduate” director’s attorney asks the court in the probate filing to seal the trust documents because “it was the expectation of [Nichols] that the revocable trust would be a private document.”
Court papers say that Sawyer, Max and Nichols’ two daughters, Daisy and Jenny, are beneficiaries of the fund, but the filing does not detail how the money will be divvied up.
Nichols, who died in November of cardiac arrest at age 83, appointed Sawyer executor of his will.
The couple of 26 years lived together in a sprawling Fifth Avenue penthouse.
Nichols collected Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards during his decades-long career, which yielded classic productions in film including “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, and stage comedies like “Barefoot in the Park.”
