People who consume alcohol in Akwa Ibom will now be made to pay tax. The
State’s Commissioner for Finance, Akan Okon, made the announcement
yesterday while speaking with Journalists in Uyo.
“Some people who lodge in hotels and consume alcohol will henceforth pay
taxes to the state government. The focus is to look inward to see how
the various opportunities that are available in the state can be
harnessed to raise the Internally Generated Revenue(IGR),’’ the
commissioner said.
The commissioner also decried the attitude of some businessmen in the
informal sector of the economy who fail to pay their taxes to
government. He noted that if they paid their taxes, it would help the
state pull resources together and that would help in providing social
amenities for citizens.
