Before you say how, the State Government does not owe
secondary school teachers, they only owe primary school teachers.
Teachers in public primary and junior secondary schools in
Kwara yesterday commenced an indefinite strike action. The teachers embarked on
the industrial action to press home their demand for payment of three months’
salary arrears.
Some pupils and students who went to their various schools
in Ilorin to resume academic works after four weeks holiday had to return home
immediately as there were no teachers to attend to them.
Teaching and learning activities were however going on in Senior
Secondary Schools since the state government is not owing the teachers in that
category.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the
state, Alh Abubakar Musa confirmed the commencement of the strike action by the
teachers. He said the strike became imperative following non-payment of
October, November and December 2015 salaries of the affected teachers.
Musa directed the striking teachers in all the 16 local
government areas of the state to stay at home until further notice.
