Katy Perry was forced to restart a performance of her hit Roar after a mistimed backing track revealed she was lip syncing.
The embarrassing moment came as the pop star performed during the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes on Saturday night.
Having bounded onto the stage in a shiny blue mini dress, Katy embarked on an energetic dance routine while belting out her catchy tune.
But almost immediately it became obvious that the 29-year-old was not singing the same track as that being broadcast to the cheering crowd.
Instead Katy and her backing dancers were obviously reacting to a different part of the track.
In a video released via LiveLeak.com, after 52 awkward seconds, a smooth-talking well dressed French man hopped onto the stage, gesturing for Katy to stop dancing, then for the music to be cut.
'If you don’t mind, we can restart. We had a little problem with the sound,' he tells an awkward looking Katy.
'I’m sorry to stop all your energy - I prefer you to be the best.'
Katy agreed to restart the track again, darting off the stage with her dancers before giving a second energetic performance.
This time her singing was obviously live, with Katy performing without a backing track.
The organisers of the show released a statement claiming a 'bad soundtrack' disrupted Katy's performance.
Writing in French they explained: 'Katy Perry sang live during the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes on Saturday night, but unfortunately a bad soundtrack was accidentally launched, taking over the live performance of Katy at the beginning of the delivery tube of the Roar.
'TF1 and NRJ present their apologies to Katy Perry… for this technical problem beyond our control.'
