He experienced an epic fall from
grace after making a homophobic slur, enduring high-profile Twitter
spats and facing the wrath of the One Direction army with some of his
controversial comments.
But James Arthur has now apologised for his behaviour in recent weeks as he took to the stage on Sunday night's X Factor to perform his latest track, the aptly-named Recovery.
Using the platform to document his regret over his actions of late, the 25-year-old singer admitted to host Dermot O'Leary that he had made some 'very silly mistakes' and 'abused' his position as an X Factor winner.
Speaking prior to his performance, he said: ''It's been an amazing year for me, incredible highs paired with incredible lows. I've made some very silly mistakes but I just want to thank everyone who stuck by me through this difficult time.
'Above all, I just want to say sorry for abusing my position as an X Factor winner because I owe this show everything.'
While some viewers welcomed the singer's bid to make amends, others took to Twitter in their droves to slate him.
One X Factor fan wrote: 'Anyone who utters homophobic epithets has no business wearing a red ribbon. Homophobia has fuelled and abetted the HIV pandemic for 30 yrs.'
Paying reference to lesbian former contestant Lucy Spraggan, another added: 'Fingers crossed Lucy Spraggen appears on stage and beats James Arthur with his own microphone.'
While one commented: 'James Arthur thinks it's OK to call a rapper a "f**king q***r". Something tells me he'd not be invited back if it was a racist slur #XFactor.'
But other fans of the ITV1 talent show were pleased James had decided to put his high-profile appearance on the show to positive use.
One wrote: 'Full credit to @JamesArthur23 for making an apology for his recent mistakes on live TV... And for bodging his lyrics a bit! #TheXFactor.'
Another added: 'Good on @JamesArthur23 for apologising just now. He could have easily ignored it. That took guts. #xfactor.'
While one said: 'good on him. A very public apology from James Arthur.'
James was widely criticised after calling unknown rapper Micky Worthless 'a f***king q***r' in a rap which spread online after Micky recorded a song mocking him for being an X Factor puppet.
It even resulted in some fans requesting a refund on his album and a petition to have him dropped from his X Factor performance.
Prior to that, James had already taken on one of the world's biggest boy bands, One Direction, in an extraordinary set of Twitter posts on Twitter.
He wrote: 'And f**k boybands! Bring on the hate I don't wanna be popular. Apart from JLS who are genuinely the coolest people I've met in music.'
In now deleted tweets, he wrote that One Direction's Louis Tomlinson had acted like a 'little b**ch' towards him ever since he called the band 'a marketing product' earlier in the year.
James was joined on Sunday night's X Factor by former contestant Rebecca Ferguson, who performed her new track, I Hope.
She said after her performance: 'I feel so nervous to be back, I feel like I'm auditioning again. I'm backing Sam Bailey and Tamera to win, I think she's a real star. But they're all brilliant.'
Tamera Foster was voted off the show on Sunday night, leaving Luke Friend, Nicholas MacDonald, Rough Copy and Sam Bailey to compete in next week's semi-final.
